A Look At The Weeknd’s Unreleased “Very Upbeat” LP
In a recent interview with Time, The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) revealed he scrapped a full album prior to the release of ‘My Dear Melancholy’. He had a full LP, full of “very upbeat” and “beautiful” tracks, which was then replaced by his most recent, dark six-track EP. The reasons why he made this decision haven’t been discussed by The Weeknd; just the fact he had “major changes in his is life”.
“Prior to Melancholy, I had a whole album written, done… which wasn’t melancholy at all because it was a different time in my life… It was very upbeat – it was beautiful.”
The unreleased LP was Starboy-esque.
The Weeknd also mentioned, “I don’t want to perform something that I don’t feel.” This linked with the ‘major changes’ obviously hints towards one thing: his break-up with Selena Gomez.
Obviously having a huge effect on The Weeknd and his state of mind, his break-up with Selena Gomez most likely influenced the creation of ‘My Dear Melancholy’. Some fans are actually happy about this, as many prefer his darker, more melancholic music, compared to the upbeat, commercialised sound of ‘Starboy’.
